Florida Legislative Session Week Three is in the books. This week at the Capital featured Rural
Counties Day; with tents, attendance, and delegations from a number of Florida’s counties. For the
Fraternal Order of Police, this week marked the final committee stops for some bills, and yet again,
the continued garnering of support for others.
House Bill 1021, a bill we are supporting, has made further progress. HB 1021 provides an exemption
for active law enforcement officers to carry firearms, as a private citizen, at athletic events
throughout the state. Current statute prohibits any private citizen from concealed carry of a
firearm at a school, college, or professional athletic event. On the 12th, the House Bill passed the
Criminal Justice Subcommittee with a vote of 16 Yeas and 1 Nay; the Nay vote from Kelly Skidmore
of Palm Beach County. This week the Bill passed the Judiciary Subcommittee with a vote of 21 Yeas
and 0 Nays. The bill is now added to the 2nd Reading Calendar on the House floor.
The Senate version of the Bill, SB 1248, has yet to have any significant movement.
