Session Week 6

We’re now in Week 6 of the legislative
session, and the House and Senate remain
nearly $5 billion apart in their proposed
budgets. Meanwhile, a third tax break
package has been introduced—this time by
Senate President Ben Albritton.
Albritton is proposing a study to eliminate
property taxes on primary residences and
implement a permanent tax break on
clothing and shoes. The Senate bill, SB 7034,
includes several sales tax holidays, along
with the proposed permanent exemption for
clothing and footwear. These tax breaks do
not require a public vote. The proposed
study would examine the implications of
eliminating the state’s **largest revenue
source—property taxes—**and assess its
impact on education, infrastructure, public
safety, and emergency services.
Despite both chambers gearing up for
conference, no conferees or allocations
have been announced. There's chatter that
staff have been told not to plan vacations
for at least three weeks beyond the
scheduled end of session, suggesting an
extension may be in the works
