HB 751 Representative Sapp
Law Enforcement,
Correctional, and Correctional
Probation Officer Benefits
On the same day as the Law
Enforcement Memorial, a key piece
of priority legislation—HB 751 by
Representative Judson Sapp—
passed the House and advanced
to the Senate for final approval. The
bill expands health insurance
coverage for law enforcement
officers and their families in the
event of a catastrophic injury or
death, including those occurring
during training. Later in the week,
the Senate companion bill was
replaced with HB 751, which passed
the Senate and now awaits action
by the Governor.
HB 1371 Representative Nix
Law Enforcement Officers
and Other Personnel
HB 1371, sponsored by Representative Nix, has
passed both chambers and now awaits the
Governor’s approval. This comprehensive legislation
includes several key provisions: allowing first
responder amputees to remain in service,
establishing new medals of honor for first
responders, prohibiting unauthorized vehicle kill
switches, and imposing mandatory minimum
sentences for attempted murder of justice system
personnel. The bill also strengthens penalties for
false reporting and for depriving officers of essential
equipment, expands search warrant return
deadlines, and updates infectious disease testing
protocols in detention facilities.
HB 113 Representative Chamberlin
Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer
HB 113, sponsored by Representative Chamberlin
and Senator Collins, has passed both chambers.
This legislation removes the requirement for law
enforcement vehicles to display insignia or other
markings, allowing agencies to limit markings to
jurisdictional identification only. It also reclassifies
fleeing and eluding offenses to higher levels on the
Criminal Punishment Code’s
ranking chart and clarifies that
courts may impose sentences
above
the
mandatory
minimum when justified.
